500 Washington Ave.

Birdie's building September 2025

The structure at 500 Washington Ave. in Colonial Beach is currently known as Birdie's and was briefly used as an event center. I attended a wedding here in July of 2019 and it was delightful.

This location reportedly at one time served as a stop for the Greyhound bus. Tickets were able to be purchased across the street at the ticket counter inside the Westmoreland Sundries store.

The building sits on a roughly 1/3 acre lot at the corner of Washington and Colonial Avenues. It has 5,000 square feet on two levels and was originally constructed in 1921 for use as Masonic Lodge #199. They utilized the phone number of (804) 224-8937. The lodge, their membership numbers dwindling, disbanded and sold the building in December of 2017 for $200,000. The new owners then spent some time remodeling and updating it. A covered porch along one whole side was added and the exterior paint color changed from white to light blue. Inside, it has the trademark checkerboard flooring and nice woodwork.

The two lots it sits on were reportedly sold for $300 each back in 1909.
