Lots to Explore in the Northern Neck Virginia area

Beginnings of the Northern Neck Virginia

Captain John Smith, who visited in 1608 referred to the Northern Neck Virginia "as a place heaven and earth never agreed better to frame man's habitation," and President George Washington, born at Pope's Creek, called it "the garden of Virginia." Within easy driving distance of Virginia Beach, Washington, D.C., Richmond and southern Maryland, "the Neck" is one of the most historic regions in Virginia. It was even known as the “Athens of the New World” during Colonial times because of the nation’s founding families who lived here, such as the Washingtons and the Lees. The region supported and attracted English settlement. They built stately homes and farmed tobacco for export to England. This became the cornerstone of the area economy.

During the "Steamboat Era" (1813 to 1927) the Northern Neck Virginia utilized a network of roughly 600 steamboats to move people and trade products (local produce, seafood and tobacco for manufactured goods, spices, and fruits) throughout the Chesapeake Bay area. The steamboat made the region more accessible to Baltimore, Maryland and even provided residents with entertainment from the James Adams Floating Theater that brought plays and vaudeville-type shows to area ports of call.
Bordered by the Potomac River, the Rappahannock River and the Chesapeake Bay, this peninsula was originally inhabited by eight Indian tribes. The waters of the rivers, bay and their tributaries provide a haven for boaters and water enthusiasts, and have supported a fishing industry for generations. Colonial architecture, small-town charm, bed & breakfast inns, wineries, museums and historic sites, marinas and retail shops are what attract visitors to the Northern Neck Virginia.

These Days in the Northern Neck Virginia

Northern Neck Virginia Counties

Four counties make up the peninsula called the Northern Neck Virginia which is bounded to the north by the Potomac River, to the south by the Rappahannock River, and to the east by the Chesapeake Bay, the counties include Lancaster, Northumberland, Richmond, and Westmoreland. King George County's welcome sign states that they are the Gateway to the Northern Neck Virginia, so they are often unofficially included.

Lancaster County

The Lancaster County Visitors Center 800-579-9102 is in the Chesapeake Commons Shopping Center. On VA 200 between White Stone and Irvington you'll find Historic Christ Church, a National Historic Landmark completed in 1735. This Colonial Episcopal church with a native walnut altarpiece, wainscoted pews and triple-decker pulpit with dome top is about 1 1/2 miles north of Irvington. Also on the church grounds are a museum, small gift shop, and restrooms. On Carter’s Creek at Irvington is The Tides Inn (800-843-3746 or 804-438-5000), recognized by Condé Nast Traveler as one of the world’s premier resorts. Tennis, biking, sailing, canoeing, fishing, or relaxing on the sandy beach are some of the activities to be enjoyed here. Golf Digest has rated the resort’s Golden Eagle course one of Virginia’s top ten golf courses. For many years, moonlight, lunch, and dinner cruises were available aboard the 127-foot classic 1926 yacht, the Miss Ann who moved to Colonial Beach in the fall of 2008 and then to the Gangplank Marina in D.C. She's currently back in Colonial Beach and listed for sale. At Lancaster on VA 3 in the Northern Neck Virginia is the Mary Ball Washington Museum, honoring George Washington’s mother, who was born in Lancaster County. In the museum complex are the Old Clerk’s Office from the 1790's and an 1820 jail. The self-guided walking tour of the Lancaster Courthouse Historic District highlights 350 years of Lancaster County history.

Northumberland County

The fishing village of Reedville is located on the northeastern tip of the Northern Neck Virginia in Northumberland County. This picturesque village of grand old Victorian homes were built at the turn of the century by ship captains and wealthy industrialists. Some of these homes have been converted into Bed and Breakfast Inns. I love the village atmosphere of this place. Once when I visited, I spotted a sign that said something like, "Reedville, VA - population: 84, dogs: 3" The Reedville Fishermen’s Museum is located on Cockrell’s Creek in the center of the historic district. Here you'll see a variety of typical Chesapeake Bay workboats such as a crabbing skiff, a menhaden striker boat (there's a thriving menhaden industry here) and a 1929 buyboat pilothouse. Grab a brochure of the Reedville Walking Tour as a guide to the turn-of-the-century Victorian homes on Main Street. Reedville is a premier destination for saltwater anglers. Many charter boats operate out of Cockrell’s Creek. The annual Reedville Bluefish Derby in mid-June draws hundreds of boaters in pursuit of fish and cash prizes. Reedville is also the site of the Blessing of the Fleet on the first Sunday in May. From May through October 15 cruise boats depart Reedville at 10a.m. daily for Tangier Island, which is 17 miles out in the Chesapeake Bay east of Reedville. The Northumberland County Visitor’s Center (804-529-5031) is located at 410 Northumberland Highway at Callao in the northwestern part of the county.

Westmoreland County

Westmoreland County has several attractions of interest. The historic deep-water harbor of Kinsale is a boaters’ community between two branches of the Yeocomico River in the southeastern corner of the county on VA 203. The town was a commercial shipping hub until the early 1900's when steamboats were no longer utilized. Colonial Beach is the second longest public beach in Virginia, and a favorite riverside recreation area for over a century. Since the days of steamer ships bringing in vacationers and weekenders from D.C. and Northern Virginia, this "Playground on the Potomac" continues to attract many beachgoers and tourists with it's historical sites, beaches, boating, fine restaurants, shops, and thriving art community. The birthplaces of George Washington, Robert E. Lee, and 5th U.S. President James Monroe are only about 10 miles apart, as the crow flies, near the southwestern side of the Potomac River. Lee was born at Stratford Hall Plantation, a huge H-shaped manor house built in the late 1730's, and home to many prominent members of the Lee family. On the grounds are a formal garden outlined in boxwoods, a reconstructed gristmill turned by a giant waterwheel, and three miles of nature trails that wind through woods where General Lee once rode horses. From the bluffs overlooking the Potomac River is a magnificent view of the river cliffs where fossils from ancient seas are embedded. It's possible to find fossilized shark's teeth here. Visitors who arrive in the middle of the day can enjoy a plantation lunch served in a log cabin. Stratford Hall is maintained and operated by the nonprofit Robert E. Lee Memorial Association. Thanksgiving Dinner at Stratford is a sell-out every year and reservations must be made early. From Route 3, head east on VA 214 about 2 miles to the entrance on the left. 804-493-8038.

Richmond County

Founded in 1692, Richmond County is located in the heart of the Northern Neck Virginia. Throughout its existence, farming, fishing, and forestry have formed the backbone of the county's economy. Serving as the crossroads of U.S. Route 360 and State Route 3, the county seat of Warsaw is currently the headquarters for many regional government agencies as well as a regional community college, vocational center, and jail.
