992 Colonial Avenue is at the Beach Gate. As you're coming into Town from Route 205 and McDonald's is on your right. The 2-story yellow building will be in front of you.
The building originally housed the Moore & White Furniture Company.
In May of 1948 the Colbay Corp. Button Manufacturers opened the button factory here. Harry G. Boyd, plant manager, oversaw the operation of twelve machines. About 40 women were employed here, producing an estimated 10,000 gross buttons per week.
The buttons began as small snail shells imported from the Orient. A parent company of Colbay in Puerto Rico made blanks from the shells and then shipped them to Colonial Beach where they were transformed into buttons.
Maritime strikes in Puerto Rico often delayed shipping of finished buttons, so the relocation of the factory to Colonial Beach was established even though labor costs were higher.
Currently the building is home to Allison Floor Service, hardwood floor specialists. They list phone numbers of 804-224-9010 and 804-761-5044.
A number of accompanying businesses have occupied this space alongside the flooring business such as Scissors Galore hair salon and Beachgate Bargains gift shop.
