Beach Laws
by: Anonymous

Is it against the law to feed the birds on the beach in Colonial Beach, VA.?
Very few people on the beach today so I and my granddaughter fed several crackers to the seagulls.
We were yelled at repeatedly by a lady that it was against the rules to feed the birds on the beach.
We have been residents for 23 years and were never made aware of this.
Is there such a law?

Katrina's Reply: That might be considered cruelty under Town Code Section 3-59 as Colonial Beach is a bird sanctuary and crackers are not good for seagulls to eat. It is best not to feed them at all. In fact, in the Beachgate Shopping Center there are signs posted which prohibit feeding the gulls.
