GrandPa Hawaii Tropical Treats
You've seen GrandPa Hawaii Shave Ice on the Boardwalk during the past few summers. Recently they’ve changed their name to GrandPa Hawaii Tropical Treats and have opened up a take out window location on First Street, one block down from the Schools.
In the off-season months, you can enjoy such scrumptious delights as Hawaiian Coffee / Cold Brew, assorted tropical beverages, custom-made pastries, soft serve ice cream, seasonal shave ice and tropical smoothies. Dairy-free options are available.
I'm excited to try the banana and Nutella crepes that they will reportedly begin serving soon. In addition to sweet crepes, they will also make savory ones. The Hawaiian coffee I sampled was absolutely scrumptious!
So who is GrandPa?
Michael Whelan lived in Hawaii for 45 years and relocated to the east coast of the United States to be closer to his daughter’s family.
His grandkids nicknamed him “GrandPa Hawaii“ and thus a new identity for the longtime surfer and ocean/environmental advocate came about.
Michael wanted to spend more time with his grandkids and teach them people skills, customer service etiquette and encourage their entrepreneurial tendencies, while giving them an opportunity to earn some money.
After a long surf session or hike young Michael learned early on there was nothing like a “shave ice” refreshment and years later “GrandPa Hawaii Shave Ice“ was born. It afforded him time to spend with mentoring his grandkids as well as sharing the “Aloha Spirit“. The goal is to bring this love for Hawaii to the people of the east coast by reproducing the authentic Hawaiian Shave Ice experience.
